The Hamawand is a Kurdish tribe residing in regions including Kurdistan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, Libya, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, and they are concentrated in Kermian, Klar, Jamjamal, Khanaqin, Sulaymaniyah, and other cities in Iraq.
The Hamawand community is centered in Jamjamal and Bazian, with over 60,000 inhabitants.
They arrived in Iraq around 350 years ago, initially being nomadic and herding-focused. The tribal leader of Hamawand in Jamjamal is Sheikh Karim Fattah Al-Hamawandi.

The Hamawand are known for their bravery and sacrifices, having a history filled with dedication to their tribe and the Kurdish cause.
They fought against the Ottoman Empire for more than 30 years, engaging also against the Qajarids and Safavids. Due to betrayal by the Ottoman Empire, led by Ismail Hakki, around 900 families were exiled to Adana, Rhodes, Greece, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen, and North Africa in 1887.
After 20 years, some of them returned to Jamjamal by foot from Libya, a journey that took 9 months.
Furthermore, they faced betrayal from the Safavids, as during a truce, the Hamawand leaders were killed and beheaded in the Qasr Shirin area by Nader Shah Qajar. They served as the armed hand of the Babanid Emirate, with Sherif Pasha Al-Jalabi Al-Hamawandi, the nephew of Suleiman Pasha, being a prominent figure.
Sherif Pasha married one of Abdul Rahman Pasha Al-Babani’s daughters, and his son Sherif Al-Jalabi Al-Hamawandi continued the struggle after his father’s mysterious assassination.
In the early 20th century, the decline of the Babanids began, and in the second decade of the 19th century, a new leader emerged among the Hamawand, known for his courage and valor: Karim Fattah Bey Al-Hamawandi.
He fought for the Kurdish cause, pressuring the British and forcing them to return Sheikh Mahmoud, the ruler of Kurdistan, from exile in India. Karim Fattah Bey continued the struggle, sustaining injuries multiple times in battles until he was martyred. His son carried on the fight.
The Hamawand tribe is known for their support of the Kurdish cause, backing the Kurdish revolution led by the late Mustafa Barzani, participating in various uprisings. To this day, they defend the borders of the Kurdistan Region against the threat of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
The Hamawand tribe has a rich history and will always be defenders and fighters for the Kurdish cause.
